St. Joseph, Coraopolis
St. Joseph parish was established in 1891. Even before the parish was founded, Mass was celebrated in a private home in Coraopolis in 1889, although generally local Catholics had to travel to Sewickley to attend Mass. In 1891, the pastor of St. John the Baptist in Monaca established a mission in Coraopolis. Until a church could be constructed, Mass was celebrated in a commercial building. Land for a church was purchased in 1894 and the church built in 1897. In that same year, St. Joseph became an independent parish with the appointment of a resident pastor.
This church served the parish for three decades. By the early 1920's, the congregation had outgrown its church. Work on a new church began in 1923. The cornerstone was laid on September 14, 1924, and the completed church was dedicated on May 31, 1925. The old church was used by the Knights of Columbus until it was destroyed in a fire in 1941.
This church continues to serve the congregation today.
