About the Commentaries...

With the wide variety of media within the Diocese of Pittsburgh reporting and commenting on Church-related issues, it is often difficult for the Church itself to have its voice heard and its positions explained to the public, including both the Catholic population and the wider population. Relying on media to accurately represent Church positions, or to present the Church’s position at all, can be problematic, no matter what information the Diocese provides through news releases, the diocesan spokesman, or other resources.

The Church position is always filtered and edited through the prism and agenda of secular media. At the same time, there is the need for immediacy – to get our message out as soon as possible. While the Pittsburgh Catholic is an important voice in getting this message out, it does not reach the wider non-Catholic public. Also, by its nature as a weekly newspaper, it lacks the ability for an immediate response.

This message is regular commentary based on editorials within the Pittsburgh Catholic or one responding to a specific event or coverage that took place that week. These messages will be sponsored by, and identified with, the Pittsburgh Catholic, although the Diocese’s communications committee will develop the content.
