Bishop Zubik Calls for Special Collection to Assist Victims in Japan

PITTSBURGH – Bishop David A. Zubik of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh has called for a special collection in parishes throughout the diocese to assist “those who are suffering” from the disaster in Japan.

Bishop Zubik asked that the special collection be taken up at the 209 parishes of the diocese on weekend Masses, March 26-27.

The collection was announced in a letter from Bishop Zubik to all parishes on March 15.

Bishop Zubik Announces Pastoral Staff Changes, Appointment for Bishop-Elect Waltersheid

PITTSBURGH – In a letter to all priests in the Diocese of Pittsburgh Bishop David A. Zubik announced that Bishop-elect William J. Waltersheid, appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as the new auxiliary bishop of Pittsburgh, will become Episcopal Vicar for Clergy and Secretary for Clergy.

That appointment will become effective the day after his ordination as bishop on Monday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral, Oakland.

In that position, he will be responsible for meeting and assessing the needs of the clergy of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, priests and deacons.

Two Catholic Schools Merging at End of School Year

PITTSBURGH – It was announced at Masses in North Side parishes this weekend that Saint Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Elementary School, Brighton Heights, and Cardinal Wright Regional Catholic Elementary School, North Side, would merge in June at the end of this school year: The need for the merger arises from the usual combination of declining enrollment, higher per pupil costs, and increased tuition requirements. The past decade has seen enrollment drop from 220 to 102 at Saint Cyril and from 235 to 154 at Cardinal Wright.

Catholic Relief Services Speaker from Ghana Tours Diocese to Raise Awareness About Hunger

PITTSBURGH – Thomas Awiapo, Global Solidarity Coordinator with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Ghana, is visiting the dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg March 9-15 during his tour of the United States to thank Catholic communities for their support and to raise awareness about hunger, relief, development and Operation Rice Bowl.

Very Rev. William J. Waltersheid, STL of the Diocese of Harrisburg, PA Named Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH – Pope Benedict XVI has named the Very Rev. William J. Waltersheid to serve as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

The appointment was announced this morning in Washington by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Bishop-elect Waltersheid, 54, is a priest of the Diocese of Harrisburg and has served since June 2006 as diocesan Secretary for Clergy and Consecrated life.

William Waltersheid to be the next Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Father Waltersheid is an outstanding priest who has served this Diocese in an exemplary fashion. In his current position as Secretary for Clergy and Consecrated Life he has demonstrated a priestly zeal and competency that was a blessing for this local Church.
