LOVEWALK FOR THE POOR
WHAT IS THE LOVEWALK FOR THE POOR?
The Lovewalk for the Poor, held around St. Valentine’s Day, is a worship and social service experience aimed to help the poor of our diocese. After celebrating Mass, walkers carry food, clothing and baby items they previously collected to a local service institution. By doing so the walkers experience the hardships of the homeless who carry their possessions with them at all times.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
The Lovewalk for the Poor is open to all youth and young adults who would like to share in a unique experience with the larger Church of Pittsburgh. Families, scout groups, and people of all ages are also welcome.
WHEN AND WHERE WILL IT TAKE PLACE?
The Lovewalk will take place on Sunday, February 11, 2007. Participants will gather at 1:45 PM for 2:00 PM Mass at Sacred Heart Church (310 Shady Ave. 15206). At the conclusion of Mass, our group will then walk on city sidewalks to East End Cooperative Shelter and Pantry (116 S. Whitfield St. 15206).
ARE THE FACILITIES HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE?
Both the Church and the Shelter are accessible.
WHO WILL ADDRESS THE PARTICIPANTS BEFORE THE WALK?
Ms. Mary Winter, Executive Directive of Angels’ Place, will address the participants at the end of Mass. Since 1984 Angels’ Place has provided a comprehensive program of educational and supportive services for parents and children. Ms. Winter will briefly reflection on the mission of Angels’ Place and inspire us to walk on behalf of the less fortunate.
WHAT SHOULD THE PARTICIPANTS BRING TO THE EVENT?
We ask that you consider bringing: non-perishable food items for EECM as well as baby diapers, infant clothes and formula, etc., for Angel’s Place (see list on page 5).

WHERE DO YOU PARK?
Many groups come by buses and are dropped off in front of the church and picked up at the shelter. Other groups park their cars at the church and walk back from the shelter after the event is over. Still others employ their own system of dropping off cars and shuttling drivers back and forth. Please see the enclosed map for parking lots.
HOW LONG IS THE WALK?
Our walk is approximately one mile long. If we have severe weather this year we can cut the walk short. We are blessed with a location that has numerous routes that we can follow depending on the weather. So see you snow, rain or shine! Don’t forget to dress appropriate for the weather!
WHEN WILL THE PROGRAM END?
The entire program ends with refreshments and additional service opportunities at the shelter. We always invite participants to stay for fellowship. The service opportunities and fellowship will run until 4:45 P.M.
