2007 Lovewalk for the
Poor
Invitation Letter
November 2006
Dear Youth Ministers, Catechetical Administrators and Ministry Team Leaders,
In Chapter 24 of the new U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults, our bishops tell us “we are invited to experience God’s love for us and return that love to God and our neighbor.” This sentence describes a very unique event in our diocese called the LOVEWALK for the Poor.
Since 1991 the LOVEWALK has invited youth and young adults across the diocese to experience God’s love with a Mass and then return God’s love by walking directly to a soup kitchen with previously collected donations. Over the years, the LOVEWALK has truly made a great difference in the lives of many, young and not so young. To continue the tradition, I am inviting you to participate in our next LOVEWALK scheduled for Sunday, February 11, 2007 at Sacred Heart Church in Shadyside.
Our 17th LOVEWALK will highlight the outstanding service done each day by Angel’s Place. This wonderful social agency first opened in 1984 and since has served two generations of young people. Angel’s Place offers programs for low income, single parents who return to school. Angel’s Place manages three early childhood development centers in Allegheny County. This organization really makes a difference in our world and the 2007 LOVEWALK is blessed to have them as the main beneficiary. As in years past, we also are encouraging participants to bring food items for East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) our shelter destination.
To help you in your efforts to promote this event, I am pleased to share with you this information booklet. In it you will find a map, permission form, a bulletin announcement, an activity along with a listing of frequently asked questions. There is also a letter from Jeff Mitch, the 2007 LOVEWALK Youth Coordinator. This will be the 3rd LOVEWALK Jeff has been involved with and over the years his leadership and dedication to the poor has made a great difference in ur diocese.
I trust this booklet will be a great resource to you. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information or have any questions.
Sincerely,
Gary M. Slifkey
