Parish History
Sacred Heart-St. Peter parish was established on June 8, 1969, by merging the existing Sacred Heart and St. Peter parishes. At the time of the merger, Tarentum had three independent parishes located within two blocks of each other. The population of Tarentum could no longer support this situation. Therefore, the two parishes were merged. As neither the existing Sacred Heart or St. Peter churches was large enough to accommodate the new congregation, work started on a new church. The completed church was dedicated on May 14, 1972.
This parish served the community for twenty years. By 1992, Tarentum could not support two independent parishes. In that year, Sacred Heart-St. Peter merged with St. Clement to form the new Holy Martyrs parish. Sacred Heart-St. Peter Church remains open and continues to serve the new parish.
