Events set for Catholic Schools Week
Faith, academics, service are part of national theme
The Diocese of Pittsburgh will celebrate Catholic Schools Week from Jan. 29-Feb. 5 with many activities highlighting the theme "Catholic Schools -- Faith. Academics. Service." (See special supplement inside this issue.)
Bishop David Zubik, in his message for Catholic schools, said, "The celebration of Catholic Schools Week gives the church and the community an opportunity to salute the success of our Catholic schools and to thank all whose efforts make our Catholic schools centers of excellence in Catholic education."
"The great legacy of our Catholic schools is measured in how well our schools transform the hearts, minds and souls of our students, enabling them to be faith-filled disciples and compassionate citizens," said Father Kris Stubna, secretary for Catholic education. "The excellence of our schools is directly proportional to the support of our Catholic community, the strength of our Christian faith and the sacrifices of many generations, each of which has shared the same commitment to pass on our Catholic teaching and values to those who come after us,"
"Abigail Adams said, 'Learning is not attained by chance. It must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence,'" said Dr. Robert Paserba, superintendent for Catholic schools. "Her insights are an excellent description of the process through which, for almost two centuries, we have created the 'Great Beginnings That Last a Lifetime' for our students."
Catholic schools locally and nationally will celebrate by hosting school, parish and community events. National Appreciation Day for Catholic Schools is set for Wednesday, Feb. 1.
Catholic Schools Week is a joint project of the National Catholic Educational Association, the world's largest private, professional education association, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Schools were invited to submit information on their special activities for the week. Following is a sampling of those events. Contact your school for a more comprehensive schedule.
