Statement of Bishop
David A. Zubik on the Appointment of Monsignor Bernard A.
Hebda as Bishop of Gaylord
The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has appointed Monsignor
Bernard A. Hebda as the new Bishop of Gaylord, Michigan. Once
again, the Church of Pittsburgh rejoices that one of our own
has been called to be a bishop. While Monsignor Hebda was
in Pittsburgh, he served our diocese well, and he remains
a much beloved priest. During his 13 years of service in Rome,
the Church Universal came to recognize the same dedication,
deep faith and leadership that he gave to us. As he now prepares
to shepherd the Church of Gaylord, he takes with him the admiration
and affection of all of us, together with our prayers for
him and his new flock.
Today, the whole Church shares in gratitude for Monsignor
Hebda’s priestly service. Over the course of my own
personal friendship with him, I have experienced firsthand
the qualities that make him a great priest and will make him
an extraordinary bishop — his self-effacing nature,
his capacity to find the good in everyone he meets, his cheerful
helpfulness. We are excited in knowing that the Diocese of
Gaylord is blessed to have such an exceptional servant of
Christ.
