Independent Auditor's Report: 2021

The financial statements of the Central Administration Fund of the Diocese of Pittsburgh are audited by the independent accounting firm of Maher Duessel. In the opinion of Maher Duessel, the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Fund as of June 30, 2021 and 2020, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.

The statements outline how the Central Administration Fund brought in and spent money in fiscal year 2021.

Revenue and Support:

• Diocese revenues were $20.4 million in 2021, down by $2.4 million from 2020
• In 2021, net collections from the Parish Share Program (the largest segment) were $12.6 million, $0.2 million less than the prior year.
• Other revenues include elementary school grant support provided from the parishes of $1.0 million, down $0.5 million from the prior year, which is redistributed to the schools. Also, included in 2021 is $2.8 million in support from the Diocesan Foundation and $0.2 million from donations and bequests which is down $1.8 million from the prior year.

Expenses:

• Central Administration Fund reduced total expenses by $2.8 million.
• The largest Central Administration Fund expenditures in 2021, were for Pastoral Administration ($6.7 million), Catholic Education & Evangelization ($4.5 million) and Temporal Affairs ($4.1 million). See Statement of Functional Expenses for details.
• The Office for the Protection of Children, Youth and Vulnerable Adults spent nearly $0.5 million in 2021.
• For the full year, revenues exceeded expenses by $1.3 million.

What is Parish Share? (now Annual Parish Appeal)

• It is an annual assessment of parish income by the Central Administration Fund of the diocese.
• Each parish is assessed a percentage of the prior year’s assessable income.
• Assessable income is primarily offertory collections intended for parish use.
• Other types of income, like the sale or lease of a building, may also be assessable.
• Income that is not assessable includes interest from deposits held at the Parish Deposit and Loan Fund, tuition and fees, diocesan subsidies and special collections for charity and Catholic missions.
• Parish Share funds are used to support regional church ministries such as the seminary, elementary school education, outreach to college students and essential administrative services for the diocese and all parishes, such as accounting, payroll, and real estate.
• Any Parish Share funds raised in excess of the parish goal stay in the parish.
• No money from the offertory collection, special collections or Parish Share was used to fund the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program for responding to abuse claims.
