Following careful review of circumstances relevant to COVID exposure, Serra Catholic High School (McKeesport, PA) will be open for in-person instruction December 2, 2020. However, all athletics and extracurricular activities are temporarily suspended.
Also, out of an abundance of caution, a number of students will quarantine for 14 days or until otherwise instructed. Impacted families have been contacted. The students involved will participate in remote learning.
“Throughout this pandemic, it has been the goal of our school to have direct instruction taking place within the building as much as it is safe to do so. The faith-based nature of Serra and our academic program comes first. Following the latest directives of our local health departments and authorities, we plan to remain in full (in-person) session at the present time,” said Tim Chirdon, principal.
In a note to school parents, Chirdon explained the temporary suspension of winter sports will still allow the school’s basketball, swimming. and bowling teams to participate in the necessary amount of practices prescribed by the PIAA before regular games begin. So far, while preliminary pre-season tournaments have been cancelled, all regular season games will still take place, as previously scheduled.
Serra Catholic High School continues to meet and exceed all diocesan, local, state, and federal health and safety guidelines including mask-wearing, social distancing, and cleaning and sanitizing protocols.
“I pray for the health and well-being of your family and ask for your cooperation as we move forward during this challenging time,” Chirdon told school families.
