As we observe the Year of St. Joseph, Bishop David Zubik shares about one of his favorite images of St. Joseph: the Sleeping St. Joseph. This image recalls the story of the Angel Gabriel appearing to St. Joseph in a dream and announcing that he would be Mary’s husband and Jesus’ foster father.
Bishop Zubik encourages us to share the deep concerns of our heart with St. Joseph, knowing that he will entrust them to Jesus. Check out resources on this page that will help you grow closer to St. Joseph through the year.
Pope Francis has declared 2021 the Year of St. Joseph. St. Joseph is the husband of the Blessed Mother and the foster father of Jesus. Through his life, St. Joseph followed God's will with extraordinary faithfulness, patience, and humility.
He took Mary, pregnant with Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit, as his wife and traveled with her to Bethlehem in the final days of her pregnancy. He was the only person with her when she gave birth to Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem. After Jesus was born, St. Joseph migrated to Egypt with Mary and Jesus because Jesus' life was endangered. When it was safe, he moved back to Nazarath with his family, where he helped raise Jesus.
